Our Community Meals Program

This past Wednesday, April 24, the Community Suppers program served its "Last Supper" of the winter season. The above picture, by Deb Boyle, captures the celebratory spirit from just a few of the many joyful hands it has taken to bring these meals to fruition every week. Included are: Richard Bertkau (Volunteer), Jana Bertkau (Volunteer), Kurt Tesch (Volunteer), Scott Campbell (Volunteer), Rev. Cathlin Baker (Minister), Jan Campbell (Volunteer, Vegetarian Meals & Gluten Free Baker), Molly Conole (Admin), Dinny Montrowl (Volunteer), Marjorie Peirce (Coordinator and Chief Cook & Bottle Washer) and Ilona Metell (Co-Coordinator).

There are at least 75 more volunteers that have participated in bringing these meals to an average of 101-178 people per week for 17 weeks...not including many extra soups and meals for the Homeless Shelter and the West Tisbury Library Food Pantry. This is a huge accomplishment for one tiny kitchen, a lot of work by many, expertly and lovingly tended by Marjorie Peirce.

A huge thanks to everyone for providing this much-needed service for so many in our community. We are so grateful for the generous support we receive from Cronig's Market, Rosewater, the MV Community Foundation, the Slough Farm Foundation, the Kaltenbacher family, and our many individual donors who assist us in meeting the needs of our community.

Community outreach continues year-round, and as the emergency shelter season ends, we are working on a new program to get meals to those without housing. Stay tuned.

Serving from the Heart of the Island since 1673

Embracing God's gift of Jesus' life as our example, and the Holy Spirit as our guide, our mission is to be a church that attracts, welcomes, serves and supports all ages and all people, ever challenged to live in harmony and joy with greater faith, hope and love. We welcome and embrace with affirmation, all persons of every age, race, culture, marital status and family structure, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, political affiliation, physical and mental ability, economic and social status and religious background, including non-believers and seekers.

OUR VALUES

P1270727.JPG

extravagant welcome

Our extravagant welcome begins with a warm greeting at the front door, continues through a worship service that strives to be mindful of the first time visitor, the unchurched, and the vulnerable. Our extravagant welcome includes our commitment to being an Open and Affirming (ONA) church. We welcome people of all ages, abilities, race, ethnicity, gender orientation, sexuality, and faith backgrounds, including those with doubts and no faith at all.

Heartfelt Service

By allowing our hearts to be broken open by the suffering and struggles of our neighbors, near and far, we have discovered vast resources and strength for service, compassion, and social action. Like so many churches in the world, our passion is for feeding our community with wholesome food and love.

Spiritual nourishment

We recognize that people are hungry for spiritual wisdom and hungry for the opportunity to share their spiritual journeys with one another. Some people find their hunger is met through worship; others need more. We feed one another spiritually in a variety of ways, through Sunday worship services, our Sunday School program and through small groups.
